These are some traditional wedding dresses around the world


Weddings are such a great occasion, something that celebrate the coming together of two people who love each other and amalgamation of two families into one. This is also a time when the bride and groom decide to wear something special as they want to remember the day forever and want to look as good as they can on their big day. Here we have some special wedding dresses from around the world that will give you an idea how weddings are different from country to country and traditions to traditions.

1 Russia

Russia is a big country with countless traditions and with majority of the population being orthodox Catholics, they usually follow the Christian traditions of marriage in the modern age. In the marriage the groom usually wears a suit, specially made for the wedding ceremony and the bride wears a white weddings dress.

2 Bulgaria

Here you see a traditional Bulgarian Muslim couple who are getting married. The groom has currency notes pinned on his jacket and the bride’s face is painted white and hide behind a veil made of sequins according to traditions to ward off evil.

3 Sri Lanka

In Sri Lankan weddings, the brides traditionally wear saris in Tamil weddings with gold borders and embroidery work done on them. They also wear lots of golden jewellery with an uneven number of gemstones in the jewellery for good luck.

In a traditional Tajik wedding, the bride wears simple white silk dress that hides her face over a pair of trousers. However since the wedding ceremonies continue on multiple days, she is allowed to change into different gowns and dresses according to the ceremonies.

5 Pakistan

Being a predominantly Muslim country, Pakistan also borrows heavily from Indian Muslim wedding traditions that include Henna application on the hands of the bride and the faces of both groom and bride being hidden by colorful veils in order to keep the evil forces from casting bad luck on them. Here is a couple from Karachi, Pakistan.

6 Japan

The groom and bride in the Japanese wedding wear a traditional dress which will be mostly white and red in color. Bride’s gown is made from high class silk and is usually white and grooms opt for black kimonos or suits.

7 Indonesia

Mostly the Indonesian weddings have grooms dressed in suits or traditional outfits. For brides, they wear Kebaya blouse and batik skirt. The dress is usually in bright color and is decorated with sequins all over and has a long tail. Also they wear a lot of jewellery on their wedding day.

The Chinese wedding is full of bright red colors since white is considered unlucky for weddings. The wedding dress can have 2 pieces and there is always a big coat to be worn on top of a shirt and the dress for both groom and bride is long. For brides, they have to wear a special tiara like headdress decorated with feathers, golden and silver elements.

India is predominantly Hindu nation and the brides in India usually choose red or orange saris or lehengas, which are basically a dress consisting of a blouse and a long skirt with lots of embroidery on it, for their wedding day. Also lots of jewelry is involved and henna is applied to the hands and feet of the bride in beautiful designs. Grooms usually choose suit or sherwanis, which are long coats worn over a shirt with traditional bottom pajamas.
