1 Medicinal properties of lime

A lime is a hybrid citrus fruit, typically round, lime green and 3-6 centimeters in diameter, containing acidic juice vessels. It can help in curing scurvy, healing oral ulcers, giving relief from congestion and nausea, rejuvenating skin, reducing body odor and dandruff, helping in digestion and easing constipation, regulating sugar absorption in diabetic patients, eradicating root cause of piles, preventing gout and preventing eye aging and infections. Besides this, it also aids in weight loss, disinfecting water to prevent cholera and is known to prevent heart diseases too.

Multiple varieties of limes are found particularly in the tropical and Mediterranean climates.

2 Results of the research

A study conducted by the Department of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand, concluded that lime juice is almost as effective as nicotine gum as a smoking cessation aid. They began by roping in regular smokers aged 18 plus for this experiment, who were willing to quit smoking. People who were already using various means in order to quit smoking like patches, inhalers etc., were not included.

A trial was conducted within a span of a few months, where one group of smokers was to receive fresh lime and one group received nicotine gum. The primary outcome that was measured during weeks 9-12 was the amount of CO (Carbon Monoxide) exhaled, in order to determine the Continuous Abstinence Rate (CAR). To gauge the degree of their craving, a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS) was used.

The results looked something like this. There was not much of a significant difference in CO-confirmed CAR between the fresh lime group and the nicotine gum group (61.7% vs 66%) during the 9-12 weeks point of observation. The degree of craving did not vary much either. Hence, they concluded that lime juice is a close second to nicotine gum when used to quit smoking.

3 How and why lime?

Lime has the ability to alkalinize the tissues in the body, which are normally more acidic in smokers. Hence, it curbs the urge to smoke. Lime is non-toxic and very easily available in comparison to nicotine gum. Also, lime has multifarious side benefits along with helping one to quit smoking, as stated earlier in this article.

You can take lime in the form of lime juice by cutting a lime along with a lemon, squeezing all the juice out and mixing to this a cup of water with a teaspoon of sugar. Its best when consumed chilled, with ice cubes.
